QUEEN CITY SCRIBES, founded by Victoria Hood and Z Lavway, features readings from local writers at Bangor Beer Co. on the second Sunday of every month. In this special series, they bring an expanded celebration of creative writing to the Orono Arts Fest

Poetry & Prose Workshop

This beginner-friendly poetry and prose workshop invites participants to explore creative writing in a fun and welcoming setting. Through simple prompts and guided activities, attendees will experiment with language, imagery, and storytelling while discovering their unique creative voice. No prior writing experience is required.

Rebecca Turkewitz
Rebecca Turkewitz is a writer and high school English teacher living in Portland, Maine. She is the author of the story collection Here in the Night (Black Lawrence Press), which was a finalist for the Maine Literary Awards and named one of Debutiful’s Best Debuts of 2023. Her fiction and humor have appeared in Best American Mystery and Suspense 2024, The Normal School, Alaska Quarterly Review, Electric Literature, Best Microfiction 2023 and 2024, SmokeLong Quarterly, The New Yorker’s Daily Shouts, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in fiction from The Ohio State University. She has been a resident at Hewnoaks Artist Residency and won a 2020 Maine Literary Award in the short works category. She loves cats, the ocean, and ghost stories.

Jennifer Moxley
Though she’s lived in Maine since 1999, she was born and raised in San Diego, California. She studied literature and writing at UC San Diego, University of Rhode Island, and Brown University (MFA 1994). Her poems have been included in two Norton Anthologies, Postmodern American Poetry and American Hybrid. Her book The Sense Record (2002) was picked as one of the five best poetry books of the year by both Stride magazine (UK) and Small Press Traffic (US). Her poem “Behind the Orbits” was included by Robert Creeley in The Best American Poetry 2002. In 2005, she was granted the Lynda Hull Poetry Award from Denver Quarterly, and in 2015, her book The Open Secret was awarded the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams award and was a finalist for the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. She teaches Poetry and Poetics at the University of Maine.

Hollie Adams
Hollie Adams, originally from Windsor, Ontario, now lives in Bangor, Maine, teaching Creative Writing and Canadian Literature at the University of Maine. She studied at the University of Windsor and holds a PhD in English from the University of Calgary. Hollie is the author of the novel Things You’ve Inherited From Your Mother (NeWest Press, 2015), and her first collection of poetry is forthcoming from Guernica Editions. She has served as the fiction editor of The Windsor Review and as Resident Artist at Acadia National Park. Her poetry and prose have been published in magazines and anthologies including Geist, The New Quarterly, Room, Carousel, Contemporary Verse 2, Best Canadian Poetry, and Best Canadian Essays.
